The story
Rachel has lived this day before. Once, her mother chose a wealthy gentleman for her sister Evelyn and a blind, wheelchair-bound scholar's son, Julian Harelik, for Rachel—and Rachel spent her life as his eyes, funding his treatments until the day he stood, let a knife take her heart, and confessed he loved Evelyn. Now she wakes on the choosing day, in the living room where her mother smiles at Julian and at Harrison Ford.
This time Rachel refuses to be the sacrifice. Her brother Will mocks her, her mother plans to spend both dowries on his wedding, and Evelyn pleads for Harrison. Then Julian rises from his wheelchair, eyes bright, and courts Evelyn with a childhood memory that was never hers. Rachel knows he has been reborn too—and that he will not simply let her walk away.
She means to live for herself, but Julian's bodyguards are already closing in.
