The story
Sarah is four months pregnant when her OB-GYN husband, Alex, takes her to collect the prenatal screening report. The doctor has declared the fetus healthy, yet the moment Alex reads the details his joy turns to terror, and he tries to force her into an abortion. When Sarah calls her parents, both prominent OB-GYNs, they turn on her too, and she dies tormented in a psychiatric ward without ever learning why.
Then Sarah opens her eyes on the very morning of the report. Pregnant again, she resolves to hide the document and uncover the truth. But Alex demands to see it, and when she reaches the bathroom the report has vanished. In the crowded hallway he seizes her arm and vows the child cannot stay.
Sarah screams for help, and strangers surround them. Alex summons her parents, and her father snatches the report from his hand. One look, and the man who once doted on her strikes her across the face.
Opening
The smile on his face froze the instant he saw the results. Without a word of explanation, he dragged me toward the appointment desk to schedule an abortion.
I stood there, stunned. The attending doctor had just told us the fetus was perfectly healthy!
I wrenched my hand free and demanded, "Why? Why do I need an abortion?"
He didn't answer. He had already booked the D&C procedure on his phone.
