The story
On their fifth anniversary, Laurie claims a sudden office emergency, so her partner's best friend Jasper and younger brother Sam take him to an amusement park. Behind the vending machines, he overhears the truth: Laurie is in Iceland chasing the Northern Lights with Simon, her first love, and Jasper and Sam are only keeping him distracted so he never catches on.
He ends the relationship and leaves every group chat, but the deception runs deeper. Laurie's company is about to launch the Boreal System, the risk-control software he spent four years building, and his name has been erased from the poster in favour of Simon, an avalanche survivor whose story sells better. Jasper, once his closest friend, now manages him with the same crisis skills he taught him.
When Laurie calls from Iceland, calm and certain he is only testing her, he tells her it is over. The launch is in three days, and she still expects him to finalise the presentation.
Opening
On our fifth anniversary, Laurie flaked at the last minute, claiming a sudden emergency at the office.
Seeing how crushed I was, my best friend, Jasper, and my younger brother, Sam, offered to take me to the amusement park. All day long, they went out of their way to pamper me, buying cotton candy and waiting in line for roller coasters. I genuinely thought they just couldn't stand seeing me down.
