The story
At her company's celebration dinner, a wife sees a message in her husband's family group chat: an unfamiliar avatar tags him as "Dad" and asks for money. The message vanishes, and Mark laughs it off as a relative's child tagging the wrong father. She says nothing, but hires a private investigator that same night.
A photo Mark posts of their daughter Eleanor hides a reflection of a woman and a boy in the child's eyes. At his parents' house she finds a stranger, Melissa, and a boy named Leo who calls Mark "Daddy" and wears Eleanor's missing gold bracelet. Mark's parents dismiss her anger, and Eleanor begs to go home.
Mark insists Melissa is a distant relative and that nothing is wrong. He does not know his wife has already begun to look into it.
Opening
Suddenly, a notification popped up in the family group chat.
An unfamiliar cartoon avatar tagged my husband.
“Dad, can I get some cash? I want to buy a new gaming console.”
I froze.
I checked again. Yes, this was my husband's immediate family chat group.
Mark and I had been married for years. We had one daughter, Eleanor.
Since when did we have another child?
The message was quickly deleted, but I couldn’t just pretend it never happened.
Before I could do anything, my husband called me.
“Hey, can you believe this? One of my distant relatives’ kids tagged the wrong dad!”
