The story
Locked in her family's underground wine cellar, Seraphina Corleone calls her husband, Zane Corleone, as her congenital heart condition flares. He refuses to come, accusing her of faking for attention while he stays with Susan, who fears the dark. She blacks out and is found by the family's lifelong steward; Zane never checks on her.
Seraphina resolves to disappear from his world within three days, using the very heart condition he dismisses as her means of escape. As she quietly readies her plan, Zane keeps choosing Susan—dismissing her spells, leaving Susan's belongings in the seat he once swore was hers, and showing tenderness only to Susan.
Even as old habits betray her, Seraphina holds to her decision, counting down the days until she leaves everything behind, including him.
Opening
Three nights ago, I was locked inside my own family’s underground wine cellar.
When my congenital heart condition hit, I called my husband, Zane Corleone, and begged him to come save me.
He didn’t come.
Instead, he stayed with another woman all night because she was afraid of the dark—and told me to stop faking it for attention.
That was the moment I finally understood.
If he cared that much about her, then I would do the one thing neither of them expected.
I would make room for her.
In three days, I would disappear from his world completely.
My steward worked fast.
