The story
Lyra has been married to Evan Foster for two years, and she still believes he loves her. On the day of their wedding anniversary, she is abducted, bound in a basement, and subjected to twelve hours of torment while a camera records everything. When her captors let her call her husband for help, she dials Evan's number with absolute certainty that he will come for her.
Evan answers only to scold her for interrupting his candlelit date with Carmen Locke, telling her that if she drops dead somewhere, he might consider handling her body. The call ends, and Lyra dies. Five days later, Evan, the police department's finest forensic expert, stands over an autopsy table examining a suitcase of dismembered remains, never realizing the body before him is his wife's.
As he pieces the fragments together and catalogues her injuries, Lyra watches, wondering whether he would still pity her if he knew the truth. Even a scar on her calf, the mark of the night they first fell in love, fails to stir his memory.
Opening
Abductors bind me in a basement, subjecting me to the torment of dozens. Meanwhile, my husband, Evan Foster, dines by candlelight with his lover, Carmen Locke.
My abductors grant me one chance to call for help, and I dial Evan's number. I'm certain he will come for me. I believe Evan would give his life for me, as he once vowed that his future held no meaning without me.
Clinging to hope, I call the number etched in my heart. However, Evan scolds me for interrupting their date.
