The story
Naomi Pendleton is twenty-eight, single, and weeks away from a career-defining transfer to London. Then a background clerk shows her the state database: she is listed as married to Marcus Brody, with a two-year-old son, Milo, registered under her name in Clearriver County. Her visa, her apartment lease, and her entire future hang on clearing the record before the transfer date.
Her parents refuse to explain, her mother insists it is a database error, and her younger sister Audrey mocks her for being forgetful. Digging into the county files, Naomi finds a marriage photo of a woman who shares her face but not the scar behind her ear, and a forged signature that misses the gap she always leaves in the letter P. At the hospital where Milo was born, the records name her mother as next of kin, and a nurse's note describes a burn scar on the mother's wrist. Naomi's own wrist is smooth. She knows that scar. It belongs to Audrey.
At Milo's address, Marcus Brody greets her by name, unsurprised, and says she arrived faster than he expected.
Opening
"Naomi, why didn't you disclose your marriage and child?"
I froze. The fluorescent light hummed overhead, suddenly too loud.
"I'm sorry?" I asked, assuming I’d misheard. "I’m twenty-eight. I’m single. I’ve never been married, and I certainly don't have a child."
The clerk didn't look convinced. She turned her computer monitor toward me, tapping a manicured finger against the glass.
