The story
For five years, Lydia believed Clay Dickerson was the good man everyone said you'd be lucky to find once in a lifetime. Then she saw the contact saved as "Baby" in his phone, and the messages from Juliana Fox that he kept wiping clean. Each time she confronted him, he called it an inside joke, a coworker in need, nothing to worry about. Each time, she swallowed the question and forgave him.
But forgiveness has a cost. On the night she burned with fever, he stayed out until one in the morning. On his birthday, he left her waiting alone at a restaurant to sit beside Juliana in a hospital room. The strand of hair she kept hidden in her journal, the late nights, the lies — they pile up until there is nothing left inside her to break.
When she finally slams the divorce papers down in front of him, he looks at her with red eyes and asks why. She has only one answer left to give.
Opening
The day I discovered that he'd saved Juliana Fox's contact name as "Baby" in his phone, he told me it was just an inside joke between coworkers.
I believed him the first time.
The second time was at our engagement party. Juliana called, slurring that she'd had too much to drink, and he abandoned a room full of guests to go pick her up.
My mother's hands shook with rage. He still had the nerve to tell me, "Don't be childish."
The third time. The fourth.
It wasn't until I slammed the divorce papers down in his face that he looked at me, eyes red, and asked, "Why?"
