The story
Five years after leaving San Francisco, architect Audrey Shaw returns for a retrospective and is recognized at the airport by a venture capitalist who remembers Daybreak Studios, the company she built with Harrison Cole straight out of college. He assumes the two are married, certain that the executive seat Apex Technologies reserved for Harrison's co-founder was hers.
It was not. On the day the merger was signed, the woman beside Harrison was the junior intern, Natalie Ward. He told Audrey that Natalie needed the safety net and the visa sponsorship, and that Apex would only suffocate her uncompromising design philosophy. He enrolled her in a fellowship instead, promising marriage once it ended. Audrey took a one-way ticket to Berlin, walked away from her equity, and never looked back.
Now the city keeps pulling her toward the past, and a dinner with her old colleague Sadie Wells may put her face to face with Harrison again.

Five years after I walked away from Harrison Cole, I flew back to San Francisco for an architectural retrospective.
I was at the baggage carousel at SFO when a venture capitalist who had shared my first-class row from Munich recognized me. His voice carried that distinct Silicon Valley frequency—part genuine reverence, part opportunistic regret.
"Audrey Shaw, right?" He offered a manicured hand, his smile tight with envy. "I still kick myself for passing on the seed round for Daybreak Studios back in the day.
