The story
As the only high-altitude search and rescue operative able to cross the Black Wind Gap without artificial anchors, Captain Ziskie is offered thirty million dollars to save a young man trapped in a glacial crevasse at 23,000 feet, with a blizzard closing in and his oxygen running out. She refuses.
Seven years earlier, her seven-year-old daughter Josephine froze to death in a snow cave when her husband Arthur Rauch diverted the rescue rope team to save his childhood sweetheart's son's poodle. Now Arthur is the client, and the man dying on the mountain is that same sweetheart's son. He raises his offer to one hundred million and threatens her team's commercial rescue permit, but Ziskie will not walk that path again.
When Cole asks who the client is, she answers that he is her ex-husband, and Josephine's father.
Opening
As the only high-altitude search and rescue operative in the country capable of traversing the Black Wind Gap without artificial anchors, I just received a private rescue contract worth thirty million dollars.
The missing person was trapped down a glacial crevasse at an altitude of 23,000 feet.
