The story
After a wildfire traps hikers in the mountains, Damien, an experienced K9 handler, refuses to hand his three search dogs to Steven, a man who claims he can talk to dogs. Damien has lived this day before: in his first life, Steven reached every victim first, was hailed as a hero, and the grieving families blamed Damien, beating him and his dogs to death. Now he has returned to the moment the fire began, carrying the memory of where the victims are trapped.
His fiancée Sara and the other volunteers side with Steven, who declares the dogs have told him Damien is an abuser. Damien takes his team into the burning woods alone, but Steven still arrives first, again and again, as if he knows Damien's every move. With the crowd turning on him and the timeline shifting, Damien must uncover how Steven keeps beating him before he is doomed to repeat his fate.
Opening
1
I unclipped the rescue harness from my dog’s back and announced I was done. We weren’t going back into the mountain.
Steven, clutching his tiny chihuahua, went pale. “If you don’t take your search dogs back up there, I’ll kill them,” he threatened.
I just unhooked the leash and let my dog, a highly trained German Shepherd, bolt for home.
I knew how this story ended.
In my first life, when the wildfire broke out, Steven claimed he could talk to dogs.
