The story
After college, Mia moves into an apartment with her older brother Ryan, her cousin Summer, her boyfriend Luke, and their longtime friend Sam. The five of them swear to share a family-style dinner every Friday, no matter how busy life gets.
But when Mia is the one held late at work, she comes home to a hot pot set with only four bowls. Ryan says he bought just enough for four; Luke tells her to give notice next time. Summer's share is always saved, yet Mia eats a single leaf of cabbage, one mushroom, one piece of beef, and is then handed the dishes to wash. The next morning the other four vanish to watch the sunrise and post photos of themselves without her, and a table built for four leaves her no seat.
Quietly, Mia begins to wonder whether this home has room for her at all.
Opening
On our first day moving in, we made a rule: every Friday, no matter how busy we were, we had to gather for a proper family-style dinner.
The first Friday, my cousin Summer was swamped with a project and couldn't make it back on time. My older brother, Ryan, waved it off. "No rush. What kind of family dinner would it be without Summer?"
