The story
Renee has always believed her marriage to Isaiah Cole was solid and her friendship with Maren Reeves unbreakable. Then, at a hospital visit, she sees Isaiah tenderly guiding Maren out of the maternity ward, and her world fractures. Two cheerful texts arrive at once—one from each of them—and the betrayal becomes unbearable.
She flees to her parents, Victoria and Randy Bentley, and vows to divorce Isaiah, but not before uncovering the whole truth. A private investigator's report reveals that Isaiah was the ex Maren once loved—childhood sweethearts torn apart by his family's cruelty. Renee realizes she may have only ever been a replacement for the woman he could not forget.
Now she must decide how far she will go to expose the two people who deceived her.
Opening
Maren Reeves, my best friend, suddenly told me she'd gotten back together with her ex.
I tore into her for going back to a man who'd already hurt her, but she only gave me a bitter smile.
"Maybe some people are just destined to keep getting tangled up with each other. Renee, I don't need your validation. I just don't want you to be mad at me."
At the time, I didn't understand what Maren really meant.
