The story
Jane has been hungry for as long as she can remember. Her mother insists she was born with a hollow leg, feeds her half a dinner roll while her brother Joey grows tall, and takes every prize she wins. At school she runs faster than anyone, but the hunger never stops, and she begins stealing small change from her father's poker money for gas-station burgers and fries.
When her mother catches her and beats her in the street, Jane endures it for the sake of a full stomach. In high school she flees to a boarding school across the state line with money hidden by her parents, only to find the lunch lady, Mrs. Gable, shorting her portions while the boys eat mountains of meat. A kind seatmate, Mia, shares her meals until she leaves for Switzerland, and a rumor Jane starts about Mrs. Gable and the football team costs the lunch lady her job.
Then the principal calls Jane into his office, where her parents demand she quit school and work at the meatpacking plant to pay for Joey's college. Jane clings to the doorframe and tells the truth about the money: she was starving.
Opening
In middle school, to make sure my brother, Joey, grew taller than me, she only gave me half a dinner roll for supper. I was often so dizzy from hunger that I’d stare at my teachers and drool.
I couldn't help it. My teacher’s freckled face looked like a sesame seed bun—oily, warm, and golden. The sun outside the window was a giant pancake, crispy on the edges and dripping with butter.
