The story
When the company offers a choice between a holiday bonus and a customised tart gift box, Fabian votes for the cash. The intern tallying votes, Davin Holt, calls him materialistic in the group chat, and department director Clark Rackham backs Davin, praising team spirit. Everyone else falls in line, leaving Fabian alone.
At the Thanksgiving team dinner, Davin brings out mixed nut tarts. Fabian is allergic to walnuts, but Davin and Clark pressure him to eat one for the sake of collective pride. When he refuses, a colleague jabs him and Davin forces the tart into his mouth.
As his throat swells and rashes spread, the room laughs, calling it an act. With his breathing failing, Fabian reaches for his medication—and finds only tarts.
Opening
During the holidays, my boss wants us to choose between a holiday bonus and tarts.
I don't like tarts at all, so I'm the first one to vote for a bonus. But the intern, Davin Holt, who's in charge of gathering everyone's votes and opinions, is quick to pin me on the hall of shame in the company's group chat.
