The story
For six years, Lauren built a life around Brad Harrington. She left her government job, moved a thousand miles from home, poured her savings and wedding money into their house, and paid five thousand of their seven-thousand-dollar mortgage every month. Then, one night, she overheard him bragging about his promotion, his bonus, and his mistress. Now his executive assistant, Vanessa Hughes, is pregnant, and Brad wants a fake divorce to protect her. He hands Lauren the papers and tells her they will remarry once Vanessa is stable. Lauren signs without a fight and walks away with nothing.
But Brad does not know that Lauren has been waiting for this day for a very long time. She visits Vanessa at the spa, plants doubt about Brad's real intentions, and lets suspicion take root between them. When Brad demands her wedding jewelry as an apology, she agrees. Then mortgage day arrives, and the payment he counted on is gone.
Lauren is no longer the wife who kept score. She is making them crumble from the inside.
Opening
Brad Harrington's executive assistant was having another depressive episode.
He pulled out the divorce papers.
"It's just paperwork," he said. "Once she's stable, we'll remarry immediately."
I picked up the documents, skimmed a few pages, then looked up at him.
"I'm walking away with nothing?"
His face twisted with impatience.
"It's a fake divorce. Are you really going to nickel-and-dime this?"
