The story
Jen Peterson works far from home in Berrington, sending her parents 5,000 dollars every month and paying a live-in caretaker, Julia Woodard, to look after them. When she returns for a rare visit, her key no longer opens the door; the locks were changed without telling her, and her own cotton slippers are already on Julia's feet.
At dinner her father orders her to wash the dishes. When she protests that Julia is paid to do the chores, her parents turn on her, praising Julia as the thoughtful daughter who stays by their side and telling Jen she may as well stop coming back. Julia stands by, looking aggrieved and gently comforting them.
Jen has funded their comfort from a foreign city, yet they treat the caretaker as their real daughter. If that is how it is, she will stop sending money and see whether Julia keeps playing daughter for free.
Opening
During the holiday, I make a rare trip back to my hometown. After dinner, Dad orders me to wash the dishes.
I pause for a moment and ask, "Do we not have a caretaker at home?"
Mom frowns and says, "Julia works so hard taking care of us every day. Since you are back, you should let her rest. You should be the one doing everything."
I fail to fathom the logic behind her reasoning.
