The story
On her wedding night, Amanda learns from her new husband Timothy Soloman that he already has a five-year-old son with Cathleen Rosenstein, the girl Amanda once sponsored through school. Timothy tells Amanda she cannot have children of her own and asks her to help raise the boy instead. Amanda demands a divorce, but Timothy refuses to cut ties with Cathleen and let the child leave Ciscosta Bay.
Amanda's brother Gary Castor is battling leukemia and needs a bone marrow donor. Timothy has spent a year searching for one and has paid a donor to come to Ciscosta Bay for the surgery in seven days. He uses this as leverage, promising the transplant in return for Amanda raising his son. Torn between her brother's life and her own betrayal, Amanda hesitates.
When she refuses to go home with him, Timothy goes to Cathleen instead, and Cathleen sends Amanda taunting messages and photos. Amanda is left to weigh how much she is willing to endure for Gary's sake.
Opening
On our wedding night, Timothy Soloman tossed a pack of contraceptive pills at me once it was over.
"Amanda, you can't get pregnant."
My brows knitted together. "But there's nothing wrong with my body."
He shook his head. "That's not why.
"I have a son. He's already five. I married you, but I also promised her there wouldn't be a second child."
I felt like I'd been dropped into an ice cellar, my whole body shaking without end.
