The story
Everyone in the Romano family knows Salvatore Romano has never cared for women, and for three years of marriage his wife Bianca was the one exception. Then her sister Lucia arrives at the estate, wanders into Salvatore's study, and everything changes. Dishes Lucia dislikes vanish from the table, including the herb lamb Bianca has cooked for three years. The roses that symbolize the Family are torn out overnight and replaced with lilies, though Bianca is severely allergic to pollen. Salvatore tells her she is being dramatic and orders her to apologize to Lucia.
When Bianca returns the rose-engraved pocket watch, the symbol of the Donna, Salvatore takes it and gives it to Lucia, naming her to stand in for the Donna and oversee the Family's affairs. The butler warns that this breaks protocol, and the elders are already demanding answers about the garden. Bianca watches the man whose heart once beat for her turn toward her sister.
Opening
During our three years of marriage, I was the one special exception.
Until my sister Lucia showed up.
He said he despised picky eaters because he'd nearly starved to death once.
Yet the dishes Lucia didn't like disappeared from the table the very next day.
He said blondes were shallow.
So for three years, I dyed my golden hair black without fail.
Lucia wore her blonde hair wild and radiant, and he presented her with a pale yellow diamond necklace.
