The story
After a night of intimacy, Chloe Miller's battalion commander husband, Arthur Vance, vanishes for three days. Word returns only through a military announcement: he has been awarded a first-class merit for rescuing his childhood sweetheart, Emily Davis, and came back badly wounded. When his orderly begs her to brew the soothing tea only she makes, Chloe refuses, telling him to find Emily instead.
Her coldness has roots. During a border firefight, Chloe, the unit's embedded medical officer, was struck by shrapnel and bled in surgery for four days while Arthur abandoned the defensive line to carry Emily to the medical tent. He called her injury a grudge and told her to process her own discharge. At a victory banquet, Emily destroys the fountain pen left by Chloe's late father, and Arthur orders Chloe to drink a glass of high-proof liquor in Emily's place, though alcohol could kill her.
Chloe drinks it, pockets the broken pen, and walks out. Her application to the International Rescue Corps has been approved, and a divorce agreement waits in her inbox.
Opening

The next time I heard news of him, it was a celebratory announcement from military command.
Arthur Vance had been awarded a first-class merit.
Only then did I learn that his disappearance over the past few days was to rescue his childhood sweetheart.
Rumor had it that when he returned, he was covered in injuries and had nearly died.
