The story
Three years into her arranged marriage to Isak, the Valachi family heir, Leona has become the family's Underboss, ruling half the city. But when Isak's old flame Julia returns to Las Vegas, Julia proposes a cruel bet: Isak gets nine chances to choose between the two women in life-or-death moments, and whoever he abandons for the ninth time must walk away. Leona agrees.
At her mother's funeral, at his succession ceremony, and again and again, Isak shields Julia first. The ninth time, after a firefight leaves Leona bleeding in an alley, a single call from Julia sends him driving off without her. Julia arrives to gloat, and Leona hands over signed divorce papers, asking only a month to settle the family business.
Isak, oblivious, signs the papers when Julia passes them off as routine documents. At home he plays the worried husband, but Leona no longer answers his touch, his apologies, or his breakfasts. When she notices Julia's cheap lighter in his hand, she lets the marriage go.

The ninth time, he left me bleeding on the side of the road with a gunshot wound to go running to Julia, who’d called him because she felt a little dizzy.
"She needs me. You get that, right, Leona?"
This time, I didn't fight for him.
He didn't know about the bet I’d made with Julia. The ninth time he abandoned me, I would be the one to leave for good.
