The story
When her five-year-old son Leo loses game after game on her phone and she swats him, he wails that he wants Auntie Claire to be his mom. Claire is her husband Julian's old flame, the woman he never got over. Suddenly aware she is living inside a story where the wronged wife is meant to walk away, she refuses to follow the script. Instead she sets out to win her boy back, even as Julian's cool distance and Leo's preference for the fun parent leave her doubting her place in the family.
Opening
My son stole my phone to play a game and went on a nine-game losing streak.
*That* useless?
I swatted his butt a few times.
He burst into tears. "I don't want you. I want Auntie Claire to be my mom."
Oh. So he's the "son" in one of those "father and son win back the estranged wife" stories. And I'm the wife they're supposed to win back.
