The story
Jenna and her boyfriend Michael both fall ill with acute appendicitis after a bad meal and are admitted to the same hospital floor. Michael's parents drive through the night to be with him, and his mother stays by his bed.
Jenna's own parents, who live in the same city, only call the next day. They say they cannot come because her brother Tyler has his SATs coming up, and they ask whether insurance will cover the surgery and whether she has enough money. Michael's mother, Mrs. Davis, brings Jenna chicken soup and congee and sits with her through a painful night.
As Jenna watches the care Michael receives, she is left to weigh what family means when she needs it most.
Opening
My boyfriend and I both got acute appendicitis after a bad meal. His parents drove 300 miles overnight to be with him. His mom sat by his bed, crying, while his dad rushed around paying bills and picking up prescriptions.
My parents, who live in the same city, finally called the next day. Their voices were full of concern.
"Oh, sweetie, you scared Mommy to death! How did this happen? You poor thing.
"Is the surgery over? That's good! Well, honey, we're not going to come down.
