The story
In a previous life, a girl and her sister were adopted from an orphanage by two very different families. The sister chose the wealthy Weston dynasty, only to find cold parents, a hostile brother named Becket, and a lonely, brutal existence. The narrator was taken in by the Miller family, a janitor and a cleaning lady, and found warmth, love, and eventually Becket himself. Consumed by jealousy, the sister killed her.
Now both sisters are back at the adoption day. The sister lunges for the Millers, certain she has claimed the role of tragic heroine and the prince's heart. The narrator is left with the Westons, where Becket's cruelty begins even earlier. But the Millers' warmth is a performance, and the sister has walked into a different kind of trap.
A quiet classmate named Avery Lane, overlooked and in danger, becomes the narrator's first act of mercy. The game has only just begun.
Opening
In our last life, my sister was adopted by a billionaire dynasty. I was taken in by a school janitor.
She thought she’d won the lottery. Instead, she stepped into a shark tank of corporate infighting, cold parents, and a brother who made it his mission to break her. She ended up with nothing.
