The story
Zhang Mingyuan is a junior college student who shares a dorm with three roommates who despise him. All three have powerful fathers, they throw out his bedding and order him to leave, and when he finally slaps one of them, they have his leg broken and the richest of them, Ping Gaolei, takes away his girlfriend. After that he is no longer allowed in the dorm while they are there, and he can only slip in like a rat to collect his things.
Then the three roommates are found dead, and Zhang Mingyuan is brought in for questioning. Captain Li and the young officer Xiao Wang press him for a confession, but he mocks them, jokes about boxed meals, and refuses to be provoked into admitting anything. He insists he only returned to the dorm for a few minutes to fetch his ID, and he reminds them that no one has ever answered for his broken leg.
When the interrogation ends, Captain Li tells him that surveillance footage shows only he entered and exited that dorm room in the past week, apart from the three victims.
Opening
It felt as familiar and natural as home.
I sat crookedly in the interrogation chair and asked Captain Li with a grin,
“What’s for lunch today?”
“Same as before, still boxed meals?”
Captain Li had a steady temperament, and without even raising his head, he prepared for the interrogation.
The young officer beside him glared at me sternly and slammed the table hard.
