The story
Seven years into her marriage, Violet Carter signs divorce papers from a hospital bed. Her husband, Ethan Blackwell, pushed her down the stairs over a word from his mistress, Sophia Sullivan; the baby is gone, and Violet has been diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. Ethan is with Sophia at her prenatal checkup, so a lawyer handles the terms.
Packing her few belongings, Violet finds the dusty sketchbook Ethan gave her in high school. On a page he once wrote that he would love her for ten thousand years. She crosses the vow out and writes that Violet is cursed. The ink vanishes, and furious teenage handwriting answers her from across time: eighteen-year-old Ethan, who chased Violet for three years, refuses to believe any of it.
Violet tells him what his future holds, and he calls it a lie. Yet he already despises Sophia, the crybaby Violet treats like a sister, and cannot imagine hurting Violet for her.
Opening
Seven years into our marriage, my husband pushed me down the stairs over a single word from his mistress.
The baby was gone. And I was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer.
On the day we signed the divorce papers, I neither cried nor made a scene. I simply dug out an old sketchbook covered in dust from the storage room.
