The story
Gia Vitale has loved Salvatore 'Sally' Morelli since they were three years old, when the boy who tormented her at school was beaten bloody on Don Tony's orders and warned that anyone who touched Gia Vitale made an enemy of the Morelli family. The Morellis and the Vitales are two of the oldest powers in New Yiz, neighbours on the same estate, and everyone expects Gia and Sally to marry after college.
Then Fiona Lanza arrives from the West, mocking Gia's pink everything and drawing closer to Sally by the day. The strawberry juice he brought her each morning becomes plain milk, chosen for Fiona's taste, and Sally tells Gia she is too sensitive when she objects.
At a Morelli banquet, an argument with another woman ends with Sally's hand striking Gia's face before the whole family and their guests. Fiona mocks her; the hall laughs. Gia calls off the engagement and blocks him everywhere, but he only asks why, over a slap.
Opening
During an argument with my fiancé, he lost his temper and slapped me across the face in front of the entire family and guests. That same day, I called off the engagement and blocked him on every last platform so that he could not reach me.
No one could believe it. After all, we grew up together. Everyone knew I had been in love with him since we were kids, and we were supposed to get married right after college.
