The story
For three years, Audrey and Leo have appeared to be the perfect couple, yet he has never touched her, sleeping in the guest room every night of their marriage. On the eve of their third anniversary, Audrey leaves divorce papers on his desk, only to discover his open journal—and the truth that he has been secretly taking her lingerie for years.
Confronted by this furtive side of her reserved husband, Audrey hides the divorce papers and resolves to pretend she saw nothing. But when Leo comes home with an anniversary gift and an invitation to visit her ailing father, she must maintain the careful civility of their marriage while testing him: deliberately leaving a nightgown in the bathroom to see if it vanishes.
It does. And from behind the guest room door comes a sound that leaves Audrey burning with humiliation, anger, and a terrifying question—what is her husband really doing with the things he steals?
Opening
But only I knew the truth. He’d slept in the guest room for all one thousand and ninety-five nights of our marriage.
He had never touched me.
I placed the divorce papers on his desk, ready to set him free. But as I did, my eyes caught on the journal lying open.
She left her things in the bathroom again after her shower. The scent of her still clinging to them. I held out for as long as I could. Then I took the lace thing. Hid it.
