The story
Ezra Kane returns early from an academic exchange to find a stranger in his home: Jasper Cole, a student the Ronald family sponsors, chopping fruit in the kitchen while wearing Ezra's personalized slippers. Jasper claims Julia Ronald invited him to stay because his dorm was too loud, and he acts entirely at ease, as if the house were his own.
Ezra had already seen Jasper's social media posts, where Jasper calls Julia his patron saint and cornerstone, and pins a comment about earning a marriage license after graduation. The thesis acknowledgments praise Julia's all-nighters and guidance, drafts Ezra recognizes from her laptop. Julia, a composed scientist and Ezra's wife since their families' long partnership, offers only that Jasper is staying a few days.
When Ezra objects to the borrowed slippers, watch and cologne, Jasper leaves in tears and Julia asks why Ezra is angry. Ezra answers bluntly: bringing a grown man into their home is not a choice she would make.
Opening
He was ecstatic, sharing his rags-to-riches story on social media—the journey from his small town to the city.
He included a photo of himself looking up at Julia, and a caption that hit me like a physical blow: [My patron saint, my cornerstone, the most unique presence in my life~]
The comments were a chorus of adoration.
