The story
For five years, Angie has loved Tristram Rowe, a wealthy man who never trusted her. When her mother lies in a hospital after a car accident and needs three thousand dollars for surgery, Angie begs him for help. He refuses, calling the sum a single dinner's expense, while he bids millions at an auction for a birthday gift for his childhood sweetheart, Desiree Galloway. Humiliated, Angie ends the relationship and accepts money from someone else to cover the operation.
Tristram refuses to let her go. He has her tested without her knowledge, then has his bodyguards drag her to a hospital to donate bone marrow to Desiree, who claims she is dying. Locked in a room and injected with drugs, Angie overhears the truth: the match was forged, and Desiree is only drawing her blood to punish her. Five days later, Tristram finally appears at her bedside, holding a bouquet of roses.
Opening
He turned me down without a second's hesitation.
"Baby, three thousand is what I spend on one dinner. I can give it to you on my own, but you can't ask for it. My family will look down on you."
I begged him through my tears. "Tristram, my mom's been in a car accident. The surgery costs money, and this is all we're short. Help me, please. I swear I'll pay you back."
Before I could finish, I heard the crack of a gavel on the other end of the line.
Then an auctioneer's sweet voice.
