The story
In a settlement where girls must fast and take a secret formula from the age of sixteen, a rabbit tail grows from the tailbone and the girl becomes a rabbit-woman, lying in her room while men file in and pay her mother. When Rebecca Hayburn turns sixteen, her sister Everly watches her endure the first night, the bruises, the whips and burns, and their mother Helen Greene's hard hand.
Rebecca soon grows hungry, her body changing, and a bloodstone begins to grow inside her. On Everly's own sixteenth birthday, Helen Greene hands her a pouch of the same sweet-smelling spices and tells her to burn them day and night. Rebecca urges her to obey.
Remembering her sister's torment, Everly returns to her room and snuffs the spices out.
Opening
My mother says this is the necessary path for a girl to become a rabbit-woman. It is also the most important thing in her life.
On the day my sister turns 16, a rabbit tail grows from her tailbone. She no longer has to work in the fields. She only needs to lie in her room each day and take the formula.
From that very night on, I see one man after another—sometimes several at once—enter her room. Before long, the sounds of heavy breathing begin to come from inside...
