The story
After a grenade blast in Veyland strips a war correspondent of her memories, Harper Eastwood spends two years in a psychiatric hospital before she finally remembers who she is. Against her doctor's advice, she flies home to the husband she has loved since childhood and the best friend she grew up with. But the house she returns to is no longer hers: a wedding photo of Russell Ellison and Pamela Hester hangs on the wall, and a three-year-old child calls him Daddy.
Cast out of her own wedding home, Harper turns to the Eastwood family estate, only to be slapped by her mother and berated by her father, who long ago accepted Pamela as a daughter. At the dinner table she is given no place, while the family dotes on Pamela and the boy. When she tries to reclaim her old job at the station, she learns her name has been deactivated and her position already filled.
Betrayed by her husband, her best friend and her own parents, Harper must decide who she is now that the life she fought to come home to belongs to someone else.
Opening
In my third year working overseas as a war correspondent, a grenade blast left me wounded and stripped me of my memories.
The PTSD that followed was severe enough to keep me in a psychiatric hospital for two years.
It wasn't until two months ago that I finally remembered who I was.
The day I came home, my best friend and my husband met me at the airport, both of them crying harder than I was.
