The story
Diana Delgado works a summer job and comes home to plates of scraps and cold rice, while her mother sets aside fresh, hot meals for her sister Maya. When Diana asks for food saved the way Maya gets it, her mother agrees easily — then serves her the same leftovers, beside the family's dirty bowls.
Her brother Michael and her father side with the household's comfort, and Diana is told to wash up and stop being lazy. She realizes she is not loved less; she is not loved at all. Her back-to-school gift has always been promised for next semester.
She has six thousand dollars saved, seed money for leaving the family behind. She asks her mother once more to save her a plate.
Opening
Some nights I couldn't find a single piece of meat across four dishes, so I ate cold rice soaked in leftover sauce, washed up after, and lay awake past midnight with my stomach cramping.
I finally worked up the nerve to ask my mom, "Could you stop setting food aside for me? It's easier if I just get delivery. Otherwise I'm dead tired all day and still have to do the dishes."
She agreed easily enough, and the next day the plate was waiting for me exactly as always.
