The story
Jocelyn has been with Julian for over five years, and their wedding invitations have just been printed. Returning home early from a business trip, she finds Julian laughing in the kitchen with Seraphina, the new housekeeper—Mrs. Jenkins' young cousin, who moved in while Julian recovered from a broken leg. Seraphina tastes soup from his bowl and playfully punches his chest. Jocelyn crushes the invitations and drops them in the trash.
Seraphina crosses every boundary: she refuses Jocelyn's gift, pushes Julian's wheelchair before Jocelyn can, enters the bedroom without knocking, and sits at the family table. Julian waves it all away, even forgetting that Jocelyn does not eat cilantro. When Jocelyn demands Seraphina leave the table, Julian hesitates before complying, and Jocelyn dumps a dish into the trash and walks out.
Days later, Julian asks her to come back and choose a wedding venue together. Jocelyn returns, but the question of who truly belongs in this house remains unanswered.
Opening
That day, I came home with the freshly printed wedding invitations, planning to surprise him.
The kitchen glowed with warm light, and he was laughing with the new housekeeper.
She scooped some soup from his bowl, tasted it, then lightly punched his chest.
"You're such a liar, it's not salty at all."
My fingers tightened, crushing the wedding invitations into a ball. I walked straight to the trash can.
"Looks like my fiancé is getting a new girlfriend."
Seraphina had only started this month. She was Mrs. Jenkins' cousin.
A few days earlier, Julian had gone skiing and accidentally broke his leg.
