The story
For ten years Elena Miller has trailed after Christian Vance, the young heir whose engagement to her is an open joke among their circle. Christian has hated her for just as long, and one careless night he gives her away like an unwanted toy, telling his older brother to take the idiot as a present if he does not mind the bad luck. So Elena trades her engagement for one with Julian Vance, and on the day of her engagement party Christian barges into the ballroom, eyes rimmed red, demanding how she dares marry someone else.
At the Vance estate the old grandfather still insists Elena is Christian's future wife, and Christian's fury only sharpens. He mocks her, shoves her aside, and finally lures her into the woods with sudden warmth, only to lock her in a dark shed and leave her to her terror. Julian, cold and distant, is the one who quietly tends her wounds.
Elena's love for the boy who once saved her refuses to die, even as Christian's cruelty keeps cutting deeper.
Opening
Because of that, Christian hated me for ten years.
Until one night, over a casual joke, he gave me away like an unwanted toy, smiling with sharp, careless malice.
"We’re both Vances anyway," he said.
"If you don't mind the bad luck, take the idiot. She's your present."
So, I gave him exactly what he wanted. I traded our engagement for one with his older brother.
