The story
When kidnappers force a gun into Elena Vaughn's mouth and demand ten million dollars from her husband, Julian Vaughn is busy zipping up Chloe Bennett's gown. On the phone, Julian dismisses the kidnapping as another of Elena's staged stunts and sends the kidnappers a single dollar as her acting fee. Left with broken ribs and a gun to her head, Elena stops begging for his love and asks only to survive.
She strikes a bargain with the kidnappers: ten million in three days, or she dies. Feverish and injured, she calls old colleagues, then signs away the apartment she owned before the marriage, liquidates her stocks and sells her late mother's brooch to raise the sum.
She returns home to find Julian and Chloe at ease in the kitchen. Julian tosses her a check for two million, expecting tears, but Elena calmly picks it up and demands the beach condo and the yellow diamond necklace as well. Julian is unsettled by her emptiness, and a smell of blood lingers as she walks away.
Opening
He focused all his attention on slowly zipping up Chloe Bennett's gown, without a thought for what Elena was going through.
Julian only agreed to pay the ransom after Elena said through gritted teeth that the kidnappers might actually kill her.
Soon after, a transfer landed in the kidnappers' account.
