I have prosopagnosia—face blindness. It took me meeting Caleb Vance, the campus heartthrob of Columbia University, three times before I could remember his face.
I never expected him to pursue me.
After we got together, I discovered his mercurial nature.
In public, he was the aloof, stoic Student Body President.
In private, he was a wild, reckless biker boy.
I honestly suspected he had a split personality.
Until one day, I saw another face exactly like his.
Only then did I realize this was just a game.
Twin brothers, sharing one face and one identity, dating a girl with face blindness.
Whoever slipped up first would forfeit the right to pursue their "white moonlight"—their childhood crush.
The university auditorium was packed.
The Student Council was hosting an Innovation Competition, and Caleb Vance was giving the opening speech.
His black suit was tailored to perfection, highlighting his impressive physique.
He wore non-prescription glasses that hid his striking eyes, making him look cold and forbidden.
The epitome of a sophisticated scoundrel.
Girls in the front row held up their phones, recording and whispering.
"Wow! No wonder he's the number one heartthrob. That forbidden vibe is everything."
"That face is illegal. How does someone look like that in real life?"
"I can't imagine what it's like to date him. Is he this cold in private too?"
My cheeks burned.
I remembered the passionate kiss last night.
The dark fire in his eyes seemed ready to swallow me whole.
"...Can I?"
"No... you promised me, not until graduation..."
I pushed him away with trembling hands, my heart galloping out of control.
"Did I really... make... that promise?"
He gritted his teeth.
His dark eyes stared at me, surging with desire, annoyance, and reluctance.
Like he wanted to devour the version of himself that made that promise in post-nut clarity.
I couldn't help but laugh.
He was always like this, forgetting his "sage mode" promises the moment he got heated.
He always tried to renege, but I couldn't indulge him.
After all, we'd only been together for three months.
We missed curfew on our date. If not for his promise, I wouldn't have dared to go to a hotel with him.
I shook my head smiling, pushing him away gently but firmly.
Irritable Caleb's eyes reddened, his Adam's apple bobbing violently.
Finally, though unwilling, he resigned himself to a cold shower.
After washing up, he tossed and turned in bed.
I was sleepy on the other bed, muttering for him to sleep.
"I'm burning up. I want to ride."
"Stop being crazy. It's midnight. We have class tomorrow."
Silence.
Just wordless silence.
I endured it for a bit, then helplessly got up, putting on my shoes and jacket with my eyes half-closed.
Caleb asked cockily what I was doing.
"Let's go. I'll accompany your madness."
He jumped up immediately, pecking my cheek happily.
He put a helmet on me and pulled me onto his cool black motorcycle.
We sped around the empty streets like wild animals.
So, is he cold?
Of course not.
Although he has two faces—public and private.
Sage Caleb is rational and gentle; Wild Caleb is reckless and free.
But neither has anything to do with being cold.
