We Became Strangers

For four years, Yvonne Gunther has been Samuel Stanton's secret girlfriend. At a Thanksgiving dinner shared by three close families, the talk turns once more to Samuel's childhood engagement to Tina Hayford, and he says nothing to deny it. He fills Tina's plate, keeps their matching mugs and outfits, and lets Yvonne be introduced to the table only as a demure little sister.

When Yvonne asks her mother, Sylvia, about her own childhood engagement, Samuel cuts the conversation short and insists she would never date anyone. So Yvonne smiles and tells the relatives she would welcome introductions. Samuel knocks over a glass, then serves her a pecan pie she is allergic to, forgetting her while remembering Tina's dislike of overcooked meat.

Outside, he calls their four years together just a title and asks why she cares so much. When Tina produces movie tickets, Samuel hands Yvonne the single seat to keep up appearances. Yvonne drops the ticket in the trash and walks away, remembering the night he first confessed and swore Tina meant nothing.
