The story
Cathy has spent years as the punchline of her own life. Her boyfriend Damon and her best friend Amber turn her appetite into a running joke, betting on how many plates she will clear while she sits in silence, swallowing the humiliation.
At a class reunion dinner, Cathy overhears them wagering money on her before she even enters the room. When she finally sits between them, Amber pushes pastries at her and Damon pulls them away, each scheming to win the bet. Cathy recalls the dessert contest she once endured for Amber's prize, and the sickness that followed. When Amber claims Cathy always complains of never feeling full, Cathy quietly says she has never spoken those words. Amber's tears bring Damon to her defense, and Cathy is left with a hollow smile and nothing more to say.
Opening
According to Amber, my appetite was so embarrassingly huge that I should probably start paying double whenever we went out to eat. And Damon, my loving boyfriend, made a show out of helping me every single time. He would pull the server aside with a performative grin, asking them to replace my standard dinner bowl with a massive, deep serving bowl normally reserved for family-style entrees.
