The story
Fiona Starr has lived through a nightmare: a wedding shadowed by the death of Mark Zimmer's childhood friend Sue Levine, three years of a cold marriage, and then her father Norman Starr dragged half-dead up a mountain before Mark did the same to her, leaving her to die in a rat-infested basement. When she opens her eyes again, she is back on the day before her wedding, her fingers whole and Mark Zimmer—the Starr family's live-in son-in-law—still in her bathroom.
This time she refuses him. Mark is called away when Sue is in trouble, and Fiona finds his backup phone unlocked with Sue's birthday. In a chat group of the sponsored suitors her father raised, she reads their mockery, their monstrous stickers made from her face, and their belief that she is behind Sue's humiliation.
Her father's call steadies her, and Fiona makes her choice: the wedding will go on, but she will marry Yves Warren, the man who left his family to serve as a Doctor Without Borders, instead of Mark.
Opening
The wedding wasn't called off, but in the ensuing three years, Mark's poker face became even more creepy, even though he would do everything Fiona asked.
Then, when Fiona was three months pregnant, she was told that her father had gone missing.
But instead of taking her to file a police report, Mark took her up the peak of the mountain, where Fiona saw her father.
His whole body was swollen and bleeding everywhere, and he was barely alive as he lay on the ground.
