The story
After leaving the hospital, Natalie gives her motorized wheelchair to her elderly parents. That night, her husband Jordan looks up the retail price and tells them to pay six hundred dollars for it. Her mother hands over her entire social security check, and her father digs crumpled bills from his wallet to cover the rest.
Driving her parents home, Natalie overhears Jordan on the phone with Savannah, his childhood friend. He has ordered her parents an imported mobility scooter for five thousand dollars. When Natalie confronts him, he insists Savannah cannot care for two elderly people alone, and that Natalie cannot compare herself to her. Savannah calls to gloat, and Jordan snatches the phone to book her parents first-class flights.
Natalie texts her lawyer to draft divorce papers. Jordan dismisses the agreement as a childish bluff, even after learning Savannah has worked at his firm for over a year. When he orders Natalie to cook for Savannah's visiting parents, she finds her own mother waiting in the kitchen, apron on, ready to serve.
Opening
After I was discharged from the hospital, I gave my motorized wheelchair to my elderly parents.
That very night, Jordan looked up the official retail price of that exact model.
"Eight hundred dollars." His tone was so flat it bordered on clinical. "If your folks like it so much, they can just give us six hundred. Consider it a second-hand discount."
