The story
Ever since childhood, Scarlett's parents have insisted she take her younger sister, Carolyn Layton, everywhere with her. Her boyfriend, Jared Gentry, and her best friend, Melissa Miller, once stood firmly at her side, refusing to give Carolyn the time of day. Then, during her senior year of college, a high school reunion changes everything: Jared and Melissa fuss over Carolyn, and the necklace Scarlett wanted for months ends up around Carolyn's neck.
It is Carolyn's birthday, but yesterday was Scarlett's too, and her own birthday has always been treated as an afterthought. Leaving early, Scarlett overhears Melissa and Carolyn talking, and then Jared's voice, and learns how long they have been keeping her distracted. She books a flight and accepts a five-year overseas assignment, then finds that Jared has planned the trip meant for the two of them for himself and Carolyn instead.
At the airport, Jared catches up with her, slaps himself, and begs for one chance, but Scarlett has already decided not to stand in his way.
