The story
Miranda Thorne's young assistant, Leo Vance, posts a cryptic message online about their messy relationship, and Miranda panics. She begs her husband, Ethan McCollum, to agree to a sham divorce so she can calm Leo down, promising they will remarry within seven days. Ethan nods, but he knows something she does not: he and Miranda are bound by a System, and the moment their marriage ends, he will be erased from this world.
Eight years ago, Ethan was pulled into this world and placed at Miranda's side. His mission was to stay with her for eight years, and he fell in love with her along the way. Now, just seven days short of the term, she has divorced him to prepare a lavish wedding for Leo. A mechanical voice tells Ethan he has seven days left, and that a terminal illness will take him.
As blood stains his hotel sheets and doctors find nothing wrong, Miranda shields Leo before her furious parents, who insist Ethan is their only son-in-law. With his final days slipping away, Ethan wonders what Miranda's face will look like when he is gone.
