The story
Born with achromatopsia, Nicole Harrison sees the world only in shades of gray, and her childhood friend James has always been her eyes, choosing her clothes and promising to look out for her for the rest of their lives. But since Phoebe transferred to their school, James gives Phoebe the umbrella meant for Nicole, the pastries they waited an hour for, and his attention, while Nicole walks home in the rain.
On prom night, James lets Nicole wear bright red to a "Deep Blue Ocean" theme, calling it a lost bet, and red is the color she loathes, the color blamed for her mother's death. When he picks a neon orange shirt for her Columbia early-admissions interview and calls it pale blue, Nicole realizes he has lied to her.
As classmates mock her and James says nothing, Nicole walks into the interview in the orange shirt and decides her future is her own, because she has already promised her father she is going to Stanford.
Opening
Yet, growing up, I never once wore a clashing outfit or picked the wrong colors.
Because James, my childhood best friend, was my eyes.
Every single morning, he would look over my clothes, sorting the pieces and telling me what shade I was wearing.
Others at school used to tease me. "She's practically blind. How does she have the nerve to order our resident golden boy around?"
