The story
Ellen Scott has grown used to walking in on her husband Andy Lowe with other women. On her own birthday, their fifth wedding anniversary, she finds him with a girl he calls innocent and sends her out through the back garden door. Andy leaves for the night without a backward glance, and Ellen smiles, because she knows something he does not: the girl carries AIDS.
While Andy stays away, Ellen quietly has the bedroom disinfected, keeps every message his new companion Janet Lane sends her, and attends her own hospital checkups. When scandal breaks, Andy asks her to stand beside him and deny everything. She does, then leaves for a private recovery center, where the doctors tell her the incubation period has ended.
Divorce is not what she wants. She wants his money, his power and his reputation, and she is willing to wait for them.
Opening
I didn’t lose control, and I didn’t question him.
I casually tossed a piece of clothing at the girl and said calmly, “Leave through the back garden door.”
She froze for a moment, glanced at me nervously, then grabbed the clothes and fled.
Andy leaned back against the headboard, looking relaxed, and slowly lit a cigarette.
“It’s her first time here,” he said as if it were only natural. “Don’t scare her.”
“She’s very innocent, unlike you. I don’t want her getting hurt.”
He paused, then added, “It’s her birthday today. I won’t be coming back tonight.”
