The story
On Children's Day, Dan finally persuades his wife Camille to help collect their daughter Lucy from school. But the teacher greets Camille as the devoted mother of a boy named Parker, who is picked up early every day, rain or shine. Camille insists the teacher is mistaken. Dan only has one child: Lucy.
He asks to be shown the way. In a bright classroom, a boy in a tailored blazer calls Camille "Mommy" and runs into her arms. Then Jackson arrives — Camille's "distant cousin," the man they helped with loans that were never repaid — and greets Dan by name. Camille says she has merely been helping Jackson raise a child starved for affection.
At home, Lucy burns with a fever while Camille complains about the car's leather and calls the child a waste of money. The medicine cabinet is empty.
Opening
It was Children’s Day, and for the first time, my wife, Camille, had actually agreed to help me pick up our daughter from school. Lucy had been begging for weeks, and Camille had finally relented, though she looked like she’d rather be anywhere else.
As the teacher led Lucy out, she caught Camille’s eye and paused, a flicker of confusion crossing her face.
