The story
When her father dies, Emily's husband Daniel is at the airport collecting another woman. Sophie Montrose looks almost exactly like Emily, and Daniel has kept her photograph in his safe all along. Emily learns she was only a stand-in for his first love during three years of marriage.
Daniel moves Sophie into the house, hands over Emily's room, and orders Emily to cook, clean and apologize. He even strikes her when she refuses. Then a message from her father's doctor reveals that the surgery was delayed by someone claiming to be her husband.
Emily packs a few clothes and her father's painting, tells Daniel he is the one who pushed her out, and walks away to bury her father alone.
Opening
When my dad died, my husband was at the airport—picking up another girl.
She looked like me. Only difference? He actually loved her.
I was just the stand-in.
Three years of marriage? It cost me my dad... and every last shred of self-respect.
But at least I finally saw him for who he was.
I left the country in a soaked dress.
