The story
After ten years of marriage, Jean Landon is locked in the security office by her husband, Blake Mason, on the excuse that she slapped Sybil Mason. Upon release, she learns her promised permanent position has been handed to Sybil as an apology. When she confronts him, Blake coldly blames her, and Sybil, a widow with a child, kneels and sobs that she and Blake are innocent.
In her past life, Jean rushed to the department store for answers, was imprisoned again, branded a thief, and starved to death while Blake flaunted his closeness with Sybil. Now she has returned to the day she was first locked away, and this time she strikes first, blocking the pair before a crowd and demanding Sybil return her money and food stamps.
With receipts and an IOU bearing Sybil's signature, Jean forces the truth into the open, while Blake shields Sybil and warns her to stop. The crowd's sympathy begins to shift, and Jean stands her ground, no longer the wife who once believed her husband was merely deceived.
Opening
During that time, the permanent job position that was supposed to be mine was given to Sybil as an apology, by none other than my husband.
Furious, I confronted him, but he scrunched his brows and scolded me coldly, "If you hadn’t gone to Sybil's workplace and slandered her, she wouldn’t have lost her job!”
Then he added, "Since you slapped her, you should apologize to her."
I nodded calmly. “So, you’re saying that as the rightful wife, I should not only let the mistress off the hook but also give up my secure job as an apology?”
