The story
The scorched apocalypse arrives with the Beastbound System, and those with the highest SAT scores claim the most powerful beasts first. Clara Jensen is the state's top scorer, but her younger sister Sophie and their parents have always favored Sophie, forcing Clara to surrender the snow python in her past life. This time, reborn with her memories, Clara watches Sophie rush to snatch the fire fox instead.
When Sophie storms in with their parents, demanding Clara hand over the fire fox, Clara sees the same manipulation she once believed. In her last life, she spent every point on the fire fox, nearly died raising it, and was betrayed and left in the snow. Sophie never spared her a single point, and their parents froze to death when eternal frost followed the heat.
Clara chooses the snow python and refuses to fund Sophie's beast. Only when Clara threatens to abandon the fire fox does Sophie transfer all three of their points. Sophie clutches her prize, unaware of the cost to raise it.
