The story
Laura has spent seven years with Ethan Hawke, completing a thousand small tasks that were meant to end in a proposal and marriage. When she moves slightly while posing for his painting, he binds her with tape. On their seventh anniversary, he asks her to help his first love, Jessica Pierce, instead of proposing, and the two-month-old child she carries is lost.
Ethan insists Jessica's competition matters more and urges Laura to be magnanimous. Laura, whose wrists were permanently damaged and who struggled to conceive after donating bone marrow to Ethan, tears up the last unfinished promise and cancels her custom wedding dress. Ethan keeps leaving her hospital bedside for Jessica, while Jessica sends photos and roses.
At Jessica's art exhibition, Ethan and Jessica wear matching outfits and let reporters assume they are a couple. Laura, pushed down and in pain, watches Ethan step back and signal her to stay silent. She must decide what remains of a love that has withered.
